This monograph is a serious sustained study of one of Ireland’s most important emerging literary practitioners : Colm Toibin. Professor Turner focuses on the origins of Toibin’s career, his stylistic and thematic shift that became apparent in THE STORY OF NIGHT(1996). Another aspect of this critical evaluation is an examination of Toibin’s career as a journalist and non fiction writer.

Delia Tudor Stewart Parnell(1816 – 1898)rose to fame in Ireland and in the United States as the “mother of the patriot” Charles Stewart Parnell. Christened “the Lady Chieftaness” by an admiring American crowd at one of her many public rallies on behalf of Home Rule, her history has always been partial and ancillary to that of her famous son. Indeed her role in the lives of her daughters Fanny and Anna Parnell—both activists in the National cause—has been little noticed nor studied.

Anna Parnell, sister of the great Irish leader Charles Stuart Parnell, was a major political force in her own right and a pioneer radical journalist and feminist. This critical edition of her political essays discusses her, her writings for Irish, British and American newspapers. In 1880, the Parnell sisters, Anna and Fanny, founded two branches of the Ladies Land League, one in New York and one in Dublin. While C.S.Parnell was confined to Kilmainham prison, his two sisters aimed to keep up the agitation for Irish Home Rule as well as but pressure on the British government to permit it.

This is the first serious historical study of birdkeeping in America from colonial times to the present. It documents and discusses the various forms of commercial birdkeeping and the opportunities it offered to women and some minorities. Research into state and national political activities of birdkeepers and their sometimes strained relations with each other (hobbyists vs professionals, preservation of environment vs. commercial exploitation) are discussed.

Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna(1790-1846) is remembered for her religious tracts and her commentaries on Industrial Britain, but her writings on Ireland of the 1820s to the 1840s have largely been neglected. Her Irish reflections cover a range of topics from agrarian violence, landlordism, Daniel O' Connell, Catholic Emancipation, tithes, restrictions on the Church of Ireland in the 1830s, to national schools, the Irish Poor Law, Father Matthew, Repeal, the Orange Order, the Irish language, and, of course, the necessity of converting Irish Catholics.

This late 19th century novel was one of the first to deal with crime and punishment in Ireland, as well as a host of other issues from a feminist as well as socially progressive point of view. Long out of print, Professor Murphy makes the case for its inclusion in the canon of Irish literature via a superbly written Introduction and an extensive series of notes and text discussions. This monograph (translated from French) is the first attempt to reconcile Camus’s deep-seated identity as an Algerian and his ideas of a multiconfessional, multicultural, non-colonial Algeria. The authors discuss the identity of Camus, his philosophy and politics, including his sexual politics, in light of a southern Mediterranean cultural nexus that stamped Camus as an Algerian rather than French (pied-noir). Camus’s cosmopolitan and radical Algiers of the 30’s is described vibrantly reflecting his extraordinary understanding of the people and landscape that evolved from his journalism.
